One of the most commonly used ‘drug’ (as we call it), Marijuana, has had a long history of notoriety behind it. Expressing the pros and cons of legalising Marijuana in India, a lingering debate that has garnered opposing opinions and verdicts, has finally led to it’s cultivation being legalised in Uttarakhand in 2018. Following the league, Himachal Pradesh, too, is set to legalise it’s cultivation.
In the year 1985, the Indian government under international pressure banned the cultivation and consumption of Marijuana in India. Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jai Ram Thakur said, that the spur in the demand could be attributed to the legalising of hemp cultivation in the neighbouring state of Uttarakhand.
Expressing the demand for legalizing the cultivation of Marijuana, he said that since it was on the rise in the state, the government is willing to consider this demand. The move is supported by both Congress and BJP leaders in the state. As marijuana has many medicinal uses like curing nausea and muscle spasms, the country is slowly waking up to its pharmaceutic abilities.
But Every Move Comes With it’s Share of… Buts!
But of course…. For a brave move as this, the call for high security and vigilance is indispensable.
In Uttarakhand, the permission is given for only using for industrial purposes and the farmers have to obtain special permission and licence from the excise department in order to grow cannabis. If Himachal Pradesh is going to follow suit in legalising the cultivation of marijuana, so it must too as far as the restrictions are concerned.
Tourists and locals are bound to strive to purchase through the black buck means… the rampant and illegal use of Marijuana and illegal cultivation needs to be checked and controlled before any such big move is been implemented. Notwithstanding that, Legalizing the cultivation of Marijuana might bring out a new chapter for all the Indian states and the cultivators.
