Most great and legendary sports persons end up winning all the major trophies their sport has to offer but many of them fail to win that ‘one’ trophy which they always wanted. Sachin Tendulkar wasn’t able to win a World Cup until his 6th. We look at some of the sports persons who achieved the ‘legendary’ status but could not have the-one-that-matters tournament:
Pete Sampras: The invincible ruler of Wimbledon from 1993-2000, Pete Sampras has 14 Grand Slams to his name: 7 Wimbledon, 5 US Open and 2 Australian Open titles. As you can see, there’s no French Open title to his name. The closest he came to the championship was in 1996 when he reached the semi-final but lost to Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Zlatan doesn’t win trophies. Trophies come to Zlatan. The prolific Swedish striker has a phenomenal record. He has won 28 trophies and numerous individual awards but unfortunately you would not see a UEFA Champions League in his trophy cabinet.
Steven Gerrard: One of the best midfielders of this century, Steven Gerrard has been known for his loyalty and enormous talent. Steven Gerrard spent 17 seasons with Liverpool in the English Premier League but Liverpool could never win the Premier League. The surprising part is even Anderson has 4 Premier League titles to his name.
Brian Lara: The West Indian run machine, Brian Lara won plaudits all over the world for his great batting skills. He is considered to be one of the greatest batsmen ever to have played the game of cricket. West Indies were a phenomenon when the Cricket World Cup started and they went onto win the first two world cups in 1975 and 1979 respectively but that was it. Brian Lara could not win a World Cup during his 17-year stint with the West Indies team.
Caroline Wozniacki: The Danish tennis player achieved the Number 1 world ranking in 2010. She has won 23 WTA and 4 ITF tournaments. Every former or present number 1 tennis player in the world has won a Grand Slam or two but you would be surprised to know that Caroline Wozniacki has ‘zero’ Grand Slams to her name.
