The entire fabric of Indian cinema is changing. And so is the context around movies and what they aim to tell. Each year we see the release of several movies that challenge our fans and viewers’ very ideology. It’s as if we are being promptly guided to appreciate the larger picture. That it’s not Bollywood- some cliched, over-decorated, mushy idiot box of entertainment but substance-driven, creatively-told emotive movie-going experience.
Over the past few years, there has been a slew of movies that have done this ‘perception management’ not as a marketing exercise but to help us and our sensibilities grow. While romance, slapstick, and action-thrills continue to roll the carpet and form the ground floor, the walkers and the monuments that stand above speak the language of cinema. 2019 demonstrated just that with films like Tashkent Files, Kabeer Singh, Gully Boy, Super 30! But as the year comes to a close, but not our anxieties in expecting what lies ahead- one wonders what 2020 holds for the promise of cinema? So which are some of the exciting Bollywood Hindi movies releasing in 2020?
On that note, let’s deep dive into a list of exciting Bollywood Hindi movies releasing in 2020:
Chhapaak– 10 Jan 2020
It can never be any easy for anyone who undergoes any kind of mental trauma. Then imagine the plight of someone who’s an acid attack victim and survivor? What could be possibly worse than having your face disfigured for no fault of your own?
In India, the life of Laxmi Agarwal, attacked in 2005, has risen to become an inspirational tale about the life and courage of a young woman who overcame the physical challenge and mental barrier of her situation to inspire the society.
Now, Deepika Padukone, among the most versatile and natural actors around, is going to essay the brave Laxmi’s story on the big screen.
Prepare for a heavy but heartening, emotionally stirring but inspiring roller-coaster ride.
Well, you know what to expect when you challenge the naturally graceful Deepika in the role of a lifetime? We’ve seen Piku in the past! Can Chhapaak be a milestone?

83– 10 April 2020
Winning the 1983 World Cup was a landmark moment in the history of Indian Cricket. In fact, where the magnanimity of the feat stands, then, even today, the famous World Cup win in England is rated highly in the annals of the sport in India, a country that perhaps cannot imagine a day without it.
But it’s sad that up to this date, none had managed to narrate the thrilling and hair-raising saga of India’s biggest cricketing achievement into a tale. While there’ve been lots of films on Cricket, of late; there’s one on Dhoni, then on Sachin, there’s been none on 83!
But thankfully, we’ll now get to reminisce the very best that 1983 brought us die-hard fans! The likes of Ranveer Singh- in a once-in-a-thousand-moons role as Kapil Dev are going to ignite massive interest toward this big release among the Bollywood Hindi movies releasing in 2020.
Director: Kabir Khan
Producer: Kabir Khan, Sajid Nadiadwala, Madhu Mantena Varma
Sab Kushal Mangal– 3 January 2020
Quiet, reticent and unassuming- Akshaye Khanna- the man who’s donned several hats on the big-screen has played a painter of brooding intensity, an ordinary man who moonlights as a Raam-Leela actor, a witty, romantic electronics store owner, a clever cop wrapped in a murder case, a legal eagle, and whatnot!
But would you have ever imagined the elegant and intense actor playing a loud, garish village supremo; a don of a kind, if you like? In Sab Kushal Mangal, Akshaye will perhaps do things he hasn’t previously in vying for the attention of a girl he likes as a crude, conniving village goon but much against the wishes of her ‘guy-to-be!’
Who’ll win this comedic, war between two emotional guys falling for 1 girl is something that you’ll have to watch Sab Kushal Mangal for? P.S.: that the massively talented Brijendra Kala has penned his maiden film does make it for a must-watch.
Director: Karan Vishwanath Kashyap

Angrezi Medium- 20 March 2020
The last time you hit the theatres to witness Irrfan and Saba Qamar, you evidenced not just solid chemistry, but also learned some valuable “once-in-a-lifetime-lessons,” in the form of uncanny friendships, completely surprising challenges life throws at you, the meaning of going out of your comfort zone, and the importance of education; and the maddening lengths parents go to, in order to afford children the best of education.
Then, whether there was learning inside the classroom or in changing one’s lifestyle completely off it, Hindi Medium made you laugh, smile, while coaxing you to value the importance of good education as also the lack of it!
What will happen, one wonders, when Irrfan and Kareena join hands and hit the school? What will become of the kid?
English Medium is among the most anticipated Bollywood Hindi movies releasing in 2020.

Producer: Dinesh Vijan
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2– 31 July 2020
2007 was a landmark year for the country, not only because India scared Pakistan, denting its confidence in the inaugural World T20, but also because one, discreet, hitherto unknown Maunjulika dropped off the big screen, scaring the living daylights out of us!
Long before she wrote a perplexing and confusing Kahaani, Vidya Balan became a one of a kind Ghungroo-adorning classical dancer or as the movie depicted, a troubled Avni captivated by the ghost of a seamstress.
Bhool Bhulaiya succeeded in breaking conventional Bollywood-thriller stereotypes by giving us the chills and tickling our funny bone in equal measure. And who better than Akshay Kumar- the suave master of comedy and action- to have anchored a wild, wild movie?
Well over a decade later, we see Kartik Aaryan- an actor possessing the same maddening energy and candor of the Khiladi in a flick that seems utterly inescapable!
The makers of Bhool Bhuliayaa 2 have done well to keep the plot under wraps. And who knows what might erupt out of the closet in the end? Yes, a Ghost. But, exactly who and of what kind?
Director: Anees Bazmee
Producer: Bhushan Kumar
Aaj Kal- 14 February 2020
When Love Aaj Kal arrived, way back in 2009, we were beaming with a smile, relating ourselves with the coy struggles, emotional meltdowns, charms, and the bittersweet moments that strike a couple so desperately in love.
While there were, once upon a time a Heer-Ranjha, Romeo-Juliet, Laila-Majnu, all that mattered in 2009, was that there were Jai and Meera.
Saif and Deepika’s chemistry was such that it ignited a spark both on the Bollywood cash register and our hearts!
Fast forward to 2020, a decade since Imitiaz Ali’s chor-bazaari on the celluloid screen and we have Kartik Aaryan and Saif’s very own Sara Ali Khan entangled in what promises to be a highly watchable rom-com-adventure saga!
Aaj Kal sure promises to keep the fan on the tenterhooks, as it’s one of the big Bollywood Hindi movies releasing in 2020.

Producer: Dinesh Vijan, Imtiaz Ali
Lal Singh Chaddha– Christmas 2020
Few actors are respected as much as they are widely loved. Is there anything that Aamir Khan- the Tom Hanks of India- can’t do? He’s played a funny college Johnny turned martyr, a tough cop out to solve a perplexing mystery, an inspiring arts teacher, a man with a golden heart albeit from the outer space and now, where the trusted word stands, he’s about to turn himself into what’ll be Forest Gump’s desi rendition.
Truly Mr. Khan- your reach is as large as that of the solar system.
Lal Singh Chaddha promises to make you smile and swell your heart with an unforgettable movie experience, something that only actors of the class and versatility of an Aamir can offer. Are you excited to witness one of the best Bollywood Hindi movies releasing in 2020?
Director: Advait Chandan
Producers: Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao
