Stan Lee, the legendary writer, editor and publisher of Marvel Comics whose inimitable but flawed creations made him a real-life superhero to comic book lovers everywhere will be missed. Almost as famous as his Marvel superheroes, he was known for bringing complex emotional life to cartoon characters.Lee, who began in the business in 1939 and created or co-created Black Panther, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Mighty Thor, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and Ant-Man, among countless other characters, died early Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
The Marvellous Marvel!
As a writer and editor he managed to keep the readers gripped and engrossed with his expert unique way of weaving stories together, which turned out as a seamless fictional world where Iron Man could join forces with the Fantastic Four, and Captain America could find himself a wedding guest alongside Doctor Strange. Lee, who teamed up with artists such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, revitalised the comics industry with his superheroes, giving them complex emotional lives to colour their all-action adventures.
His characters, though tough and strong, came out as humane as well. He knew when to play the emotional card to his benefit, giving super heroism a real sensitive side. That was his ace… where he caught the heart of his readers and audience. Did you know he made an appearance in almost all of the Marvel films!
“The hardest part is getting enough people to draw ’em all,” he said. “You know what it’s like? I can’t play a musical instrument to save my life. I’ll ask, say, a guitarist friend how he plays a melody with one hand and chords with the other when he’s only got one brain. Well, it’s the same with me. Writing stories is what I do. I think about it, but it’s no problem. I’ve just gotta get the time to do it.”
After the death of his wife Joan, his wife of 69 years, in 2017, Lee’s home life and business affairs came under the blanket of controversies when he sued executives at POW! Entertainment — a company he founded in 2001 — for $1 billion alleging fraud, for damages over what he called a “sham deal” with a Chinese company, then abruptly dropped the suit weeks later.
He then, filed for a restraining order against a man who had been handling his affairs, Keya Morgan. Morgan was later accused by Lee’s attorney of taking advantage of Lee’s age to influence and control him.
became the subject of widespread speculation. This year, he filed a $1bn lawsuit against his former company Pow! Entertainment ; two months later he dropped the lawsuit, and called it “confusing to everyone”. Police had also investigated allegations of elder abuse, with Lee filing a restraining order against a former business manager,
And in June 2018, it was revealed that the Los Angeles Police Department had been investigating reports of elder abuse against him.
The Indian Connect
Not many know of this, but the legend brought his superhero fetish to India as well. His Indian superhero, Chakra, is a tech genius named Raju Rai, who emanates chakras to keep Mumbai safe. Chakra also got his own animated movie in 2013. The movie was aired on Cartoon Network in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The character was also given a peculiar American accent and the film was followed by two sequels.
A live action movie was on the cards, and Stan Lee was to make an appearance in this one too… But the fate of that one remains dubious as Phantom Films that was supposed to produce the film, dissolved!
The Untainted Legend
“He felt an obligation to his fans to keep creating,” his daughter J.C. Lee said in a statement to Reuters. “He loved his life and he loved what he did for a living. His family loved him and his fans loved him. He was irreplaceable.”
Yes, he is irreplaceable! We saw him through his characters, complex, yet easily understood, just like he was….RIP Sir Stan Lee!
