Noida is considered one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the NCR region. In order to sustain this image, Noida’s Sector 15-A has become a zero-waste colony setting an example for other localities. The sector got a compost machine installed in the month of June followed by other sectors including Sector 8, Sector 47, Sector 82 and Sector 93 which were put by the Noida Authority.
How it started
The idea took birth after the Clean India campaign started and the authorities proposed to put a compost machine in various sectors. Given the amount of garbage produced by the residents, the need to put a compost machine seemed imperative. There are around 600 houses, a shopping complex and a community club which produces 1000 kg of garbage every day. But waste pickers and segregating bins couldn’t help much. The compost machine now helps in producing 100 kg of manure within 24 hours as all the kitchen waste and green waste goes into it.
Talking about the clean drive, people are active more than ever to take it forward. Several training programs and street plays by volunteers are being conducted to make people aware about waste management. However there is still a fight for going ahead with the idea as the costs are high. Currently the residents have to bear the electricity bill which goes as high as ₹ 50,000 every month. The RWA of sector 15A are in talks with the officials to subsidise the same. Another challenge is to make people understand and act on segregating the waste at home so that it saves the segregation process being done at the compost machine.
How the sector has set an example
The residents strongly feel that their responsibility is not over by just installing a compost machine. The initiative has to inspire everyone to be environment friendly. From banning plastic bags to appointing more cleaners to replacing garbage bags by paper bags, the residents have ensured there is no litter on the streets and nothing should harm the environment. It is overwhelming to see people becoming more responsible towards nature and their surroundings, which has also led the Noida Authority to get compost machines installed in other localities too as well as reduce the installation charges.
