‘Wifi Achey?’ is probably the most common query for most of us. It’s the age of being logged in! Market places, metros, malls, airports…. people bank on wifi for most part of their day. As is innate with the city, Kolkata beats the rest of the metros. Kolkata, has become India’s first fully WiFi-enabled metro city, and they have the telecom giant, Reliance JIO to thank.
The WiFi services will be initially free of charge. The services inaugurated by the West Bengal chief minister, Mamta Banerjee have been first made available at Park Street. It will be next available in the Ghariahat- Gol Park area of South Kolkata and accordingly by the end of April 2015, the whole city will be WiFi enabled.
The idea is to bring the entire Kolkata Telephones area under their 4G coverage. It might take another eight months to a year, but that doesn’t diminish the savviness of the city.
The WiFi services would enable any WiFi device users to log on to the internet zone using a password provided. For Smartphone users, the services are available just a simple click away on the WiFi option.
New Delhi too, is on its way to develop this facility soon. A free WiFi service in parts of Khan Market and Connaught Place have already been rolled out. Though Gurgaon is still struggling to bring the functionality into place.
Didi’s pride could be gauged by her tweet… “All my WiFi friends, I am tweeting using #WiFiKolkata. So proud to be first WiFi Metro city in India. Congratulations to us all.”
