Humanities As A Religion? Bethune College Introduces It, In Kolkata.

Bethune College, being Asia’s oldest women college has introduced humanities in the religion option in the admissions form. The introduction has opened doors for more students and it is observed that students are welcoming this “Humanitarian” approach. There is another college that has the same approach. Here is everything you need to know about it:

Options In The Admission Form

Humanities has always been an option to be chosen as a course from the +2 classes, but now being in the religion category has shocked everyone. The online admissions form has seven other options to chose from in the religion section. The seven options apart from humanities are: Hindu, Muslim, Jain, Buddhist, Sikh, Christian and others.

In Kolkata, Bethune College is not the only one, but Acharya Praffula Chandra College also has humanities in their religion category.

Motive Behind The Approach

The Principal of Bethune college, Mamata Ray said in an interview that she has realised some students to be reluctant to mention their religion in the admission form. They appreciate their views as they feel that ‘Humanity’ is the true religion of mankind. So they decided deliberately to keep this category in the religion section. The decision was taken unanimously on the part of our admission committee.

There has been a positive impact of introducing this option in the category in the social media platform and the twitter site is flooded with posts, which loves the inclusion of Humanities.
