Trams have been the mode of transport in the city ever since 1960s. This age old transport has served the city happily for many decades but people however do not prefer this slow moving tram any more. Being a part of the heritage of Kolkata we still have a few trams running over limited number of routes only. Recently they have been used as a part of the recreation for the people in the city making it a tourist attraction as well.
The trams in the City Of Joy refuse to retire and decide to roll in an innovative manner instead. A restaurant in a moving tram car was initiated by Kolkata Tram Services on Saturday, 13th of October 2018. The culinary journey will began yesterday, that is the 14th of October starting from Shahid Minar in Central Kolkata to Kidderpore. The tram will be moving around Maidan, one of the most picturesque site in the city….It is Victoria On Wheels!8
This unique culinary tram will make four trips per day. Twice at lunch hours and next two times at the dinner hours. Sanjiv Goswami, the director of the Victoria group and also a restaurant operator has taken the rights to run this culinary tram in the City of Joy. As known from him there would be a special service only for the pujas. It will be the additional fifth round of the tram car on the tracks.
The inauguration of this special tram car service was done by the transport minister Suvendu Adhikari. He was happy to announce this special restaurant on tracks as a gift for the people on occasion of the biggest celebration in the city.
Tie up of this tram has been initiated with few brands in order to keep an assured service for the people in the city.
The Calcutta Tramways Company has come up with a super innovative idea of generating money by opening up the restaurant on wheels. The tram is well painted to look attractive into various artwork depicting the tourist attractions in the city. The air conditioned moving car on wheels brings to Kolkata a unique experience of dining. It has a musical ambience and bio toilets as well. The Victoria group has bagged the contract for a decade and will be paying the CTC a sum of around 1.6 lakhs per month.
The patronage of the trams have decreased to a great extent due to the increase in the other mode of transports in the city. Even though the fares are still low as Rupees 6 and 7, but still people do not prefer the slow moving tramcars any more.
The tram offers both vegetarian and non vegetarian menu at INR 799 and 999 respectively on a 90 minutes ride from Shahid Minar to Kidderpore and back again. The food includes a welcome drink, starters, main course and also a desert.
