Here Is The World’s First Marine Cemetery In Kozhikode, Kerala

City's Truly

February 25, 2020

When we think of a large burial ground, we think of it for humans. Kerala has been a little different from every other city since a long time now. Kerala has built the first marine cemetery in the entire world and thats a biggie. Reason owing just to the fact about raising awareness regarding water pollution, which is a lot we can say!

We are surrounded by the eco-system and owe our lives to it. Marine is something which is the most neglected out of the entire eco-system. Digging deeper to this notion, few environmentalists have come together (for the betterment) and created this Marine Cemetery, which can hopefully serve as a huge reminder for the people about the importance of Marine safety and cleanliness.

This cemetery has been constructed at Beypore Beach, Kozhikode, Kerala. This wonderful project is lead by Jellyfish Watersports with the help of Kozhikode district administration and Beypore port department and this 'CLEAN BEACH MISSION' is headed by Aakash Ranison.

What triggered them to take this step? It is the fact that over 8 species of Fish have been endangered or extinct like parrotfish, hammerhead shark, dugong, zebra shark, leatherback turtle, eagle ray, Miss Kerala and the seahorse.

Unlike a normal cemetery which is made of sand or mud, this one is made with iron stands which is stacked up with plastic bottles, giving out a message of the effects of Single-use Plastic on the life of these marine animals.

It is claimed that between 4.8 and 12.7 million single-use plastic is dumped into these waters and more than the marine animals and plants, plastic is said to be found inside the sea. This is huge threat to these marine animals. It's time we all come together and do not let this thing harm the eco-system as it can be harmful to us in future.
