Truth be told, we’ve silently created a self-manufactured image about dashing, successful corporate individuals existing in the throngs of Banking, Real Estate and similar industries. Leading travel heavy lives with a paraphernalia of gadgets, frequent-flier miles, expansive PowerPoint slides and the painfully-correct tedium of doing the right talk- we feel our friends from these industries are, at some level-simply- unapproachable. They seem busy. Surely, more than an average top ranking scholastic dude. They almost seem out of time. One can tell they are the Rolls Royce meets expensive White Whine from the very top echelons kind of people. This bias we’ve been clinging to instantly falls apart, like ripping, falling cages when you meet Sotheby’s International Realty’s Amit Goyal, the CEO of India Operations.
Amit Goyal is not your everyday day young, dynamic and driven professional. He is more. There’s this telling immensity about Amit Goyal that glazes past a studious bespectacled look. He knows what he is doing- a feeling that gleefully emanates from his élan. His easy-going presence and ever-approachable personality, one that walks calmingly parallel to his corporate life makes for heart-warming observations. He greets you with a jovial smile, suggesting he’s unhurried, even though that next meeting is ticking somewhere in his mind. He walks with the elegance of a perfect time-bound solider who you feel is not going to let you down.
For some funny reason, as you walk beside Amit, trying to discern his idea about life, corporate challenges and life at Sotheby’s International Realty, you feel like observing from a glass house – a multidimensional view of life that glows brighter than this sunshine. That, this successful and high-ranking professional hailing from one of the best corporate standpoints- Sotheby’s International Realty- is in no way a mean achievement, it never quite burdens the conversational space that you happily enjoy with him. In Amit Goyal’s ebb lies a resume that has elegantly conquered some nervy challenges of achieving excellence in Corporate Banking, Investment Banking, Real Estate Advisory and now, Luxury Real Estate Marketing. Here’s what we at What’s Up Life were able to gather from this elegantly-dressed, straight talking gentleman:
Describe your role at Sotheby’s Realty
I am the CEO of Sotheby’s International Realty, India operations. To be responsible for overall India strategy and to execute plans for one of the fastest growing markets in this part of Asia; a thrill and an elaborately exciting challenge that few other things can match.
What’s the best part about your work
To add value to our clients. Help them achieve their aspirations. I love to present them with options to make an educated decision and support them through their journey of building assets to secure their future.
How has the recent dip in real estate and property affected the industry and specifically your work?
Any challenge is a huge opportunity for growth. We are using this time to consolidate ourselves, strengthen our foundation and make consistent strides to emerge as leaders in the market. When you look at a difficult situation, there are usually two ways to react: Either you worry thinking the worst that’s going to happen or think about it being an interesting opportunity of rising above odds. Am excited to think of the latter today.
How do you handle such enormous success having blazed a trail from investment banking to plush Realty business?
Bob Dylan said “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.” My journey is best measured with the friends I have made along the way.
Some insights in the Indian market from the context of Realty sector?
Here’s the thing that stands out and needs critical attention. There is a need for professionally managed real estate services and savvy clients are happy to pay for quality advisory services.
What is Sotheby’s International Realty vision for India?
It is a simple albeit an all-encompassing vision. To be the leader in the Luxury Real Estate Space.
How does Amit Goyal relax away from work?
I workout as often as I can, read a book very fifteen days and spend time with my wife and children. Spending time with the family is key and also, spending time with oneself perhaps relaxing in the nature like going for quite walks and spending time with dear ones, helps to relax.
What are the key constructs of making it big in this industry. Is negotiation and skill with communication the only requisite to success?
Well, according to me adding Value is the key construct. Understanding the client’s requirement and sincerely making efforts to provide the best solution.
What do you think of Delhi. What’s the What’s Up factor according to you here?
Delhi is my home. It’s warm, trendy and filled with unique heritage.
Any passions in life? How important is traveling and striking a balance in life according to you?
I like to travel as it makes me a good orator. Extremes are easy. Balanced life is the secret.
Who are your inspirations?
My parents. They made me who I am.
What do you make of the start up culture in India at the moment? What do you suggest for today’s start ups?
With a large majority of the population under 35 years of age, it presents a huge opportunity to fill many gaps in the market. I encourage start-ups having a long-term vision to provide extra ordinary solutions.
Nothing great was ever achieved from living in a comfort zone- Amit Goyal, CEO, Sotheby’s International Realty
