The architect of modern Hyderabad possessed a fleet of 50 Rolls Royce along with an indomitable love for his countless concubines, we are talking of the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan Siddiqi.  From 5000kg of gold donation to the National Defence Fund to knitting his own socks, the last Nizam led a life marked with worth and weirdness.

How many of us know how much about the last Nizam of Hyderabad?

Journey in a Glimpse

His Exalted Highness Nawab Sir Mir Osman Ali Khan Siddiqi, Asaf Jah VII GCSI GBE, was the last Nizam of the Princely State of Hyderabad and Berar. Mir Osman Ali Khan Bahadur was born on April 6, 1886. After the death of his father, Mir Mahbub Ali Khan, Osman Ali Khan Bahadur took over the throne when he was just 25 at that time. The sixth Nizam ruled Hyderabad between 1911 and 1948, until it was annexed by India.

The Nizam signed the Instrument of Accession and the State was integrated into the Indian Union. Though deposed, he was allowed to stay on in Hyderabad wherein he accepted the position of Rajpramukh when the state government was established in 1950. He occupied this office till the formation of Andhra Pradesh in November 1956. HEH Osman Ali Khan Bahadur died on February 24, 1967.

Family Ties

The Nizam lived at King Kothi Palace, Hyderabad. He had 7 wives and he was survived by 18 sons and 16 daughters.

There are 120 grandchildren. The richest of them are the two eldest grandsons, Mukkaram and Muffakham.

Feather in the Cap

The last Nizam took keen interest in the restoration of the then newly-discovered Ajanta and Ellora Caves at Aurangabad. He also initiated the Archaeology department of Hyderabad. It was under his rule that Hyderabad started taking steps towards becoming one of the biggest cities in India. He was known as the architect of modern Hyderabad. his involvement in the making of various buildings in Hyderabad. Few examples are Osmania University, Osmania General Hospital and Hyderabad High Court. Nearly all the public buildings in Hyderabad were built during his reign.

During his 37-year-long reign, electricity was introduced, roads and airways were developed along with railway routes in the state. Osman Ali Khan introduced many educational reforms during his reign. About 11 per cent of the Nizam’s budget was spent on education.

The Pompous Nizam

Mir Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII was the world’s richest man in the 1930s and the 1940s, with a wealth of over $2 Billion. That was 2 percent of the entire American economy at that time! He had a fleet of 50 Rolls Royce cars, which included a Barker-Coach built Rolls Royce Silver Ghost acquired in 1912. He is reported to have found the Jacob Diamond -which is the world’s fifth largest diamond- in the toe of one of his late father’s shoes. The Nizam’s 173-piece jewellery collection had an estimated worth of £200 million but it was bought by the Indian government in 1995 for a low price of £33m. His collection of pearls alone could fill up an Olympic size swimming pool.

According to TIME reporter, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, pearls and gems at the Nizam’s palace were stored in USD 3 steel trunks fastened with padlocks. employed 38 staff to dust palace chandeliers. The last Nizam had a total of 14,718 employees when he died. In his main palace alone, there were about 3,000 Arab bodyguards, 28 people paid to fetch drinking water, 38 to dust chandeliers, several specifically to grind walnuts and others whose job was to prepare addictive betel nuts for him to chew.

The Little Known Nizam

He knitted his own socks, wore the same patched clothes for months and borrowed cigarettes from his guests. Despite his riches, he liked being frugal. He disciplined himself to live on the equivalent of £1 a day and smoked the cheapest brand of cigarettes, relighting and smoking the discarded butts. When the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII and, after his abdication, the Duke of Windsor visited him in 1922 he wanted to make sure he felt at home. So he arranged for his chamber pot lid to play the National Anthem when it opened. He was well-versed in English, Urdu and Persian.

When The Last Nizam Passed Away….

The Nizam had willed to be buried in Masjid-e Judi. The location faced King Kothi, his residence in Hyderabad. On the day he died in 1967, at the age of 81, thousands of people had turned up on the streets of Hyderabad for his funeral. The Nizam’s first grandson and technically the heir to his throne, Mukarram Jam, succeeded him – but he soon found himself immersed in financial chaos. Mukarram emigrated to Australia and spent much of his inheritance setting up a sheep farm, which failed.

In his absence, his grandfather’s unsupervised Hyderabad properties were looted and precious artefacts sold in street markets for a few rupees. What was left of the Nizam’s phenomenal wealth has been used to pay off debts and maintain the lavish lifestyles of his many descendants.

God made man and then he provided him with all the requirements that he needs; animals, trees, the air, rain, and the list can go on. Certain animals need human care and protection, constantly taking care of their daily needs. Some of us can adopt and welcome them into our homes and then there are certain kind-hearted people who manage to build an entire place just to rescue abandoned ones looking into their needs as providing food, hygiene, medical facilities etc., which is certainly not a simple job. It takes a heart and a lot of patience, time and energy to be consistent in what they’re doing. Hats off to them!

In the later years, the organization expanded and opened up at jubilee hills, that is now a 2 acres land space. Marriott Executive Apartments(MEA), is the second serviced apartments in India, as Mumbai being the first. It stands on top of SLN Terminus in Gachibowli, amidst the populated cyber city. As you enter the lobby you see nothing but chic style décor with a lot of contemporary design splashed all over! Another wonderful aspect is the staff, which extended a warm welcome and maintained that decorum throughout my stay.

Another opportunity for a staycation and why would I let it go? I could do almost anything to skip the mundane duties of a regular day in exchange for a fully pampered stay at not just a hotel but a five-star luxurious service apartment!

Marriott has three different kinds of spacious and well equipped serviced apartments. The first one being the studio apartment, one bedroom apartment as the second and a two bedroom apartment as the third. These rooms open with an entrance into the kitchenette that eventually opens into the living room, a utility area and a luxurious walk-in closet. Most rooms have the botanical gardens as the view including a look at the concrete jungle! I was lucky enough to get a breathtaking view of both these visual delights. Surprisingly, you could even spot the beautiful peacocks amidst the luscious gardens!

Coming to the amenities, the kitchenette has a microwave, an induction stove, a refrigerator, a toaster, dishwasher and much more. Guests can always get help from the service staff who can help in cleaning the dishes or even chopping vegetables. There’s a gym located on the roof-top that’s well equipped and a conference hall which also converts into a kids area when guests are dining. MEA allows guests to order food through online applications like Swiggy or Uber Eats which otherwise is not allowed in a usual five-star hotel. Groceries and other necessities can be purchased from SPAR which is located below the apartments.

There’s a ‘Grab & Go’ marketplace in the lobby where you can pick up anything from chips, soft drinks, fruit juices, snacks, etc at MRP prices. There are also a few restaurants like 10 Downing Street and HyperLocal in the same building for guests to unwind.

Now speaking about the most gorgeous part of the apartments is the roof-top restaurant Mazzo that holds a breathtaking view of the city and the luscious botanical gardens! The humungous pool just adds up to this beautiful place. A sunset from this height can be nothing less magical with the wind blowing literally from all directions! Certainly a perfect spot for a romantic dinner by the pool overlooking the stunning city lights!

Mazzo is a multi-cuisine restaurant that serves Italian, continental, north and South Indian. Their South Indian food definitely deserves a mention here as they excel in serving some soulful regional food as the chef himself also hails from this region. They have buffets for both breakfast and dinner throughout the week. The Sunday brunches are lavish and part of it is arranged by the pool making it more exhilarating! Every week the restaurant offers set meals that are theme based, making one indulge in one cuisine for lunch every day. So there’s Thai, Chinese, Mughlai and the likes as options.

Waking up to a laid-back lavish breakfast in bed is what probably dreams are made of! I could without an ounce of a doubt say that this was the most pampered part of my stay at MEA! I had the staff get me in a huge spread of toast and egg, sausages, hash browns, fresh fruits and juices and of course my cuppa morning coffee essentials.

Receiving a wonderful opportunity for a staycation at MEA along with my favourite set of blogger friends was nothing less than perfect! A huge Thank You to the entire team of Marriott Executive Apartments especially Mr.Mudit Sharma for a fully pampered weekend!

Paranormal activity looks good on the television but what if you knew ghosts existed, and still haunting the places they once resided in? Doesn’t seem a possibility? But there are incidences where people have seen these figures roaming around, marking their presence still in the living world and the places being called ” HAUNTED “

Hyderabad is known for the pearls and the Charminar but there is more to it. Its loaded with history and with that comes a lot of unsolved mysteries and spooky secrets that still lingers in the minds of people.

But if you love ‘the other side’ and want to experience the goosebumps, here is where you go…

Film City of Hyderabad

haunted

“I see something!”

“I don’t. You are just seeing things”.

And the matter is forgotten. But are you just seeing ‘thing’? or is it someone behind you?

A wide spread of acres, where film stars shoot and perhaps stay a day or two is actually built on the war grounds of Nizams. With so much royalty around, there had to be some bloodshed around and some really bad spirits around it too. Although this place is the hub of tourists, it retains itself as the most haunted place in Hyderabad.

When asked around, it had unexplainable cases of having the lights fallen down, some knocking on the bathroom doors when the doors are locked from outside, even strange messages on the mirros written in Urdu (an script used thousands of years ago by the Nizams to communicate)

Unfortunately, some incidences have said to have cause harm to lightmen who have been seriously injured. They swore that they had been pushed from behind and found no one around. Women haven’t been safe either. There had been reports of women clothing being torn at inappropritate places and menacing shadows following in the changing rooms.

If this hasn’t creeped the hell out of you, then try spending a night here. The hotel staff have umpteen horror stories for you going around. If you are willing to believe then Ramoji fits your paranormal fantasy.

The Haunted House

haunted

There is a nice posh colony near St Francis Degree college, Begumpet. It all began in a bunglow where a family used to live- Mother, father & 2 daughters. The father supposedly left his family because they were acting strange, unlike other people. Everyday they followed a routine to throw their garbage to a huge garbage bin, about two kilometres away from their house. The house is surrounded by student hostels and temples.

The house began to be hidden under overgrown lawn and bushes. The members in the house began to walk around with candles in the house because there was no electricity. Also a bottle filled with blood was carried around by the mother and the daughters. They spilled it over in the house and the compound, drop by drop. Incidently, they had no maids, no one visited them, the cable connection was cut off and payments were due. Despite this, the electricity bill was paid in advance, according to some sources.

Things began to reveal when a robber broke into their house through a window. The house stunk and there were dead bodies of all the family members on the bed. Laid in a straight line. Soon the police caught up with the mystery and the postmartum revealed that they were actually dead 6 months ago!

Questions such as, who used to drive the car, who walked around the house, whose blood did they spill?

The people in the colony, the college students and the hostelites were all shocked to their core when they came to know that the interiors of the house was just unpainted with the bricks still cemented, where as the outside was beautifully painted.

This was quite a revelation. It is believed that till now the house has not been purchased, renovated or demolished. In 2003, this house was the most talked about.

The Golkonda Fort

haunted

The fort of never ending stories, secret passages and rulers who were always in some controversy or the other. To begin, The Golkonda Fort was built in the 13th Century by the Kakatiyas, the then ruling dynasty of Andhra Pradesh. Later whomever ruled, renovated the fort according to his fancy and whims.

During one of the renovations, precious diamonds began to be revealed and secured in the fort. Diamond such as Kohinoor, The Hope Diamond, The darya-inoor and the idol’s Eyes are all legends to the mines of Golkonda fort.

Another gem, equally precious to King Abdullah Qutub Shah was the talk of the town. Taramati, a beautiful courtesan, sang beautifully and danced like an angel. She caught the king’s eye and he was so fascinated by her that he made her his queen one day. They died truly and irrecovoably in love,  buried together in the cemetery nearby.

At present, the once mighty fort is in ruins and serves primarily as a tourist spot or as movie sets. Many people who ventured into the ruins have come back with terrifying stories about the place. It is said that the fortress is haunted. The most popular ghost is Taramati who usually is spotted dancing in her former stage, the royal courtroom. Some visitors were caught off guard by the owner-less shadows gliding here and there. There are reports of old pictures being turned upside down and objects hurled against the walls. The most susceptible spectators of such paranormal activities are those who stay back, past the deadline (6 pm). Many film crews who happened to be present there at late hours heard disturbing noises and witnessed most terrifying supernatural activities.

Many people dismiss such rumours as publicity stunts to lure tourists. These incidents will remain rumours until you go check it out yourself.

The Unsolved Mystery of Shamshabad Airport

haunted

It is said that a lot of dispute had gone during the possession and set up of the shamshabad airport. Lot of people were killed during the riots and their bodies are still buried under the concrete of the airport. Incidences where employees being called into an enquiry room, to be faced with a man whose head turns 360 degrees laughing out aloud has been reported but dismissed.

Siasat Newspaper, A Urdu media, reported that the pilot of Quatar airways suddenly stopped his plane and stranded it in the runway because he could see a woman in saree dancing around. The authorities searched high and low for someone but the runway was clear.

For months now such incidents haven’t happened at the shamshabad airport but you can never be too sure.

Thus continues the mysteries of Hyderabad. Though the stories are too made up to be believed- I will only say- you don’t always have to see it to believe it.
