Four years ago when I was moving to Gurgaon and looking for an apartment near Sohna Road, I was advised not to. People said, it was too far away from the city centre, it’s desolate, there’s nothing there. It was true then.
Today, it is the upcoming and happening part of the city, with malls, shopping, movie halls, pubs, eateries, swank apartments and a metro connectivity in the not too distant future. With both MG road and Golf course Rd fairly chock-a-block, jaded and with woes of traffic and crowds, Sohna, the new babe in town, is looking attractive – still in its nascent stages, but with lots of potential.
Bars & Pubs
With the recent relief by the Supreme Court that the Bars the 500 Mtr Ban for Liquor Joints is not applicable to bars on highway within the City Limits… The Bars on Sohna Road are now Open again.. almost after 6 months of closure
Brewer Street, is a casual dining restaurant located in ILD Trade Centre. The place offers an amazing ambiance and an affordable menu which serves an array of multi-cuisine dishes. Laid-back hangout with an urban feel and terrace seating offering pub fare and house-brewed beer.
Vapour Bar Exchange, is a swank German style micro-brewery complete with chic interiors, low lights and live music. Large and spacious, this is a good place to hang out with a big group. In true tradition of Gurgaon beer pubs, Vapour has a good selection of classic as well as signature blends of beer.
The Brewhouse, located at Fortune Select Excalibur, Lobby Level, Sohna Road, Gurgaon is a unique sports bar. It has a unique ambiance that is created with handpicked decor items that include antiques, woodcarvings and etc. which makes the place more alluring.
Striker, located at The Sapphire Mall, Sector 49, High-ceilinged, rustic style cafe with white decor and furniture and a Mediterranean/Italian menu.
Big Shot Bar, situated in Country Inn Suites, Sohna Road, Big Shot Bar hosts a trendy lounge that has cozy seating and is an instant attraction amongst youngsters. It is definitely a must visit place for people who want to have a worthwhile and fun nightlife.
Open Tap at Vatika Business Park takes pub classifications a notch further down, as it describes itself as a nano brewery. Nano in size too, this is a ‘no pretentions’ buddy pub, where one goes in mainly to chug down a few beers.
If one is looking for a more business class experience, then Lagom at JMD Building in Sohna Road is a good bet.
A quick (or not so very) count puts the current numbers at about 120!! That is a fairly delectable number, given that most of it is in and around a 3 km stretch. And the choices are equally mouth-watering. Be it fine dining, quick service restaurants, cafes or pizzerias.
To give a rapid round up, to begin with, there are numerous quick service everyday cuisine outlets that one can pop down to on an I don’t feel like cooking today’ day. Haldiram, Bikanerwala, Sagar Ratna, Subway. Golden Dragon at Spacedge Mall, Barbeque Nation at Spaze Platinum.
Then there are the mid-level places for a ‘let’s have something different’ days that are casual yet not too heavy on the pocket – DCK (dana choga kitchen), Pind Balluchi & Burger Singh in ILD, Dining Options at V Club next to Tatvam Villas, The Nook and Naivedyam in Vatika city… to name a few.
Pizzas n burgers, well that’s anytime. But if the mood is for something other than pizza hut or dominos, then there’s pizza vito at ILD, Urban chefs at Iris tech park or Needs gourmet and Café Maple street in Vatika. Pino’s also does good pizza.
Mid-week celebrations or fine dining? Try Coriander Leaf (promises Pakistani cuisine) at Vatika business park or Zodiac, Oriental Pavillion & Earthen Oven in Fortune select. Or if you are in a mood for a drive, go further down towards Sohna to Country Inn and Suites.
A number of ‘stop by for a bite’ or ‘pick up food’ joints dot practically every commercial centre on Sohna Rd. ranging from South Indian to Arabian n Moroccan to street food to continental. These are just service counters where you stand n eat or pick up your food to go. Arabesque, Food of Choice, Mind It , Nawabs Kebab in Omaxe, Viva Hyderabad in Raheja, Truffle Tangles in ILD, Matka Pir Chote Nawab in Malibu centre, Qureshis kabab corner … a new one probably opened in the time I am writing this; that’s how many of these are there and offering just about every kind of food one could want.
Cafes, patisseries & coffee shops
Apart from the ubiquitous Starbucks Café coffee day and Barista, guess Gurgaon really does love coffee and desserts, as the sheer number of such outlets here are mind boggling. The Coco Company is a newbie that does in-house use of ingredients for cakes, pastries, french desserts and cookies. Cup n cake at Ninex is one of the most popular and my favourite; the cupcakes here are just ‘to die for. ’
Starbucks & Doughlicious in vatika business park, bakers oven at Sapphire, Craves at Spaze I tech, My pie in Ninex, Binge at Bestech, Bake craft in Malibu, Fortune Deli n Fortune select, Let’s just say, given that all of these are within the 3 km radius, there somewhere one can sit and grab a coffee or pastry almost every 200 mts!
Sohna Road is not just about its food joints. The number of supermarkets and hypermarkets all within a small radius is surprising; (yet all of them are jam packed at any given time). Maybe it’s because of a lack of a ‘kirana’ store culture in Gurgaon. But given the cosmo-global outlook of Gurgaon, guess it stands to reason. So there is Big Bazaar, More supermarket, Easy Day, 24/7 and Needs Gourmet for practically all and sundry.
Branded big nameS in clothes as Pantaloons, Shoppers Stop find a place. With the sprouting of shopping malls such as Good Earth City Centre, Elan Town Centre, Scottish Mall, Platinum Mall And Raheja Mall, there is no dirth of places to go for retail therapy. A few factory outlets of Van Heusen, Allen Solly and Nike have their presence. Multi brand electronics stores, Reliance Digital and Croma have set roots here. Single brand outlets of Nike, Reebok, Monte Carlo and a few others have set up shop here.
No gaming centres or bowling alleys yet, but movie halls are plenty. SRS is the big daddy here with 2 movie halls in Omaxe mall and in Celebration mall. Grand cinemas have a 4 screen hall at Raheja mall. V club has indoor badminton and squash courts and a home theatre…recently opened its open air theatre, for the star gazing movie experience.
Spas and fitness centres
Just look around at the extremely well groomed, chic, fit and toned inhabitants of this city. Though an increasingly popular phenomenon in most urban societies, for the people of Gurgaon, fitness and grooming are a lifestyle mantra. One can find a fitness centre, parlour or spa practically spilling out of every mall and commercial centre. Some of the more popular ones in and around Sohna include Alcor and Blue Terra in ILD, Asian Spa at Omaxe, Avion Day at Raheja and Mystic in Ninex.
Sports Fit in ILD Mall, Extreme fitness in Omaxe, Viva fit in ILD, Elemention @ Vatika city, Fivemore near Sohna Rd, are some of the top end fitness players on Sohna.
Like I mentioned, Sohna is the most upcoming part of Gurgaon today and there’s a lot happening. So check it out yourself. There’s a lot more to discover.
