We all love our gastronomical indulgence at fine-dining restaurants, bars and lounges….but to be honest, complete fulfillment of a good, hearty meal can be experienced only at the roadside kiosks and Dhabas, desi style! But what if you could have the best of both the worlds?… the ‘dhaba’ experience in a fine-dine set up? Yes, it has been made possible….Ramada Gurgaon Central is currently hosting the Punjabi Dhaba Festival at Cafe Rouge and i had the opportunity to be privy to it first hand!
The festival wasn’t hard to spot, owing to the flawlessly and definitively done decor that spelt ‘Punjabi’ in every bit of it. The area, authentically set up a la dhaba style with ‘Charpoys’ and ‘Moodas’ (stools) as seating, donned with jazzy accessories was enough to bring alive the ‘desi’ ness! What caught my attention were the ‘Dhol’, stationed on the charpoy, the food stalls done with thatched hay and the make shift well. The ‘Daaru ka Theka’ was a delight to watch with a display of choicest liquor and cocktails served by the very colourfully dressed staff in dhotis !
The stalls served the most popular Punjabi street food…Jalandhari Aloo Tikki with Chana which literally melted in the mouth, a perfect blend of sweet and spicy and the Gol Guppa, that the Punjabi in me got devouring in plenty! Mr.Gaurav Sachdeva, Assistant Food And Beverage Manager, was kind and courteous enough to guide me around the stalls.
Now What is a Punjabi food festival without Sarson ka saag and Makki Ki Roti, correct? So, synonymous with the brigade, i savoured on the dish and how! My review would be incomplete without the mention of the most preferred dish on the Punjabi menu….Choley Bhature; made freshly on the live counter, it was hard to resist. After my fill of all this, the Garam Lassi ka Shorba was the much needed course to settle the gastronomic delights i had just indulged in.
That was not all, I had the opportunity to meet the expertise behind the delectable magic i had experienced, Chef Amit Kumar, who was extremely sporting and even cooked up some magic for my photo op! Thank you, Chef!
My verdict?….This food festival definitely gets a thumbs up from me for the effort put in, the decor that transports you completely to the Dhaba set up and for tingling the taste buds with the most delectable spread, made special by the use of in-house ingredients, ensuring the level of quality!
