Human Library….the name itself might raise some eyebrows, as it did mine. The concept is one of the most revolutionary, to have hit, designed to bring about a unity of thought. Imagine having to read a human book! A deviation from mundane, Human library aims to challenge the quintessential norms and shows how the ‘Different’ can help the ‘normal’,
Human Library embarked its journey in Denmark in the year 2000, with a motive to facilitate open and honest conversations that can lead to greater acceptance, tolerance and social cohesion in the society. After which it has gained its wider presence in more than 80 countries across the globe. Off lately, the movement was extended to Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Pune and is soon to grow its roots in Gurugram. Ronnie Abergel, the vision behind this concept aimed at breaking notions about the society’s marginalized communities by the way of conversation.
Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers. They could be religious minority or sexual minority or other members of the community who are exposed to general misconceptions, stigma, stereotyping and or prejudice. The purpose is to challenge what we think we know about other members of the community, to challenge our stereotypes and prejudices in a positive framework, where difficult questions are accepted, expected and appreciated. A heterogeneous community having enormous experiences that are waiting to be heard on a platform that gives people, who are human books, an opportunity to talk on an interpersonal level with the readers.
In the year 2000, at Roskilde fair, Copenhagen, Denmark, Ronni Abergel initiated a movement for social change when he held the first ever Human Library. Ever since, humanists from over 80 countries, to create an ever expanding network of Human Libraries across the globe. Depots at Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai have been raging success. At a Human Library, you loan a human book and read through the pages of their lives that stood brave in the face of challenges.
An environment crusader, a recovering drug addict, a homosexual, an HIV fighter, are some of the books you will get to interact with at the Gurugram Book Depot. We give you an opportunity to embrace the power that ignites within you by giving an exposure to talk, transform, connect and draw different implications from conversations that will change the vision of others life.
After a successful partnership with HL Delhi, they now bring you the Gurugram chapter of the Human Library.
