Gurgaonites love their pets; it’s not uncommon for homes to have even more than one pet. And they get the same care and comfort as children do – be it with special food or clothes in winter or fancy bedding. One of the biggest concerns of pet owners is leaving them when they travel on holidays. Fortunately, in a city like Gurgaon, the options are plenty.
Numerous kennels and boarding facilities are available across the city that cater to different needs/size/temperament of pets. Check out 2 or 3 places along with your pet to figure out the best place for you and your pet. My personal opinion and experience is to leave your pet in the chosen facility just for a day, a couple of times, so your pet can get used to the place and be assured that you will be back to take it home again.

This dog training and boarding facility is one of the premier and maybe the oldest such facility in Gurgaon. Alfa 11 is run by a qualified dog trainer and behaviour analyst, Mr. Rajesh Bhatt. With the different needs to different types of dogs kept in mind, home boarding is available for smaller breeds and dogs with timid temperaments and a large farmhouse on the outskirts of the city is allotted for bigger breeds of dogs that need the space to run around. At both centres, dogs are kept in indoor comforts at night, and well trained groomers ensure that the pet is fed and well looked after. Day care facility is also arranged for pets living in small apartments and need a day out for play, swim or exercise. Behavioural or correctional therapy is also provided for young pets.

Vet Hospital-based boarding
Online research may reveal mixed reviews and experiences with private boarding facilities like the 2 mentioned above. So then, what are the options? Worry not. Large Veterinary hospitals such as CGHS (near Guru Dhronacharya metro station) is a full-fledged hospital that also provides boarding facilities. Here, however there are no large open spaces or swimming pools, and pets are kept in individual kennels. Each space is large enough for the pet to move around comfortably, and only one dog is kept in a kennel.
The pets are taken out regularly for walks and exercised. The rooms are air-conditioned and sterile. In fact, great care is taken to ensure that dogs don’t intermingle. Each pet is given a tick bath before being taken in. and the owner can ask for preference of food that the pet is used to. Though it gives the ambience of being extremely clinical and sterile, and lacking human/other dogs interaction, one can rest assured that the dog is in safe hands.

Jeevashram Veterinary Hospital & Pet Boarding
Another such similar facility is the jeevashram hospital, just outside Gurgaon, in Rajokri. Jeevashram is recognized by the Animal Welfare Board of India, and is associated to the RSPCA, UK, and affiliated to WSPA, UK. Here the management is very particular about procedures before leaving the pet for boarding. Before a dog is left for boarding, the owners are requested to visit the facility a minimum of three times. During the first visit, the owner is taken around to show the facilities and discuss arrangements; on the second visit, the dog is left at the facility without the owner for a day; and during the third visit, the dog is left without the owner overnight.
These visits are to enable both the pet to get familiar with the facility and for the hospital staff to understand the pet’s behaviour and temperament. These visits are not charged. Though without the posh ambience of private boarding facilities, the fact that it has extremely qualified doctors and well trained handlers is comforting to many pet owners. Boarding here is provided for both dogs and cats.

This is a unique boarding facility for owners looking for a more homely atmosphere to leave their pets while they are on holiday. And it’s not just for dogs – it could be cats, hamsters or fish. Vizal Atheya takes in pets into her own apartment, where they are looked after like her own. This is a boon for small dogs and pets with timid temperaments, who would be very uncomfortable in larger kennels. She says that they even feed pets by hand if need be. Here, pets can be left even for a day or by the hour. She also offers pet grooming services and massages. So you can book you dog in for a day of pampering.
