On the face of it, there is no comparison. One is an arty funky, bohemia set in a ramshackle, winding lane, with a collection of pubs and eateries crammed into and literally set atop each other and even beneath, the other is a glitzy glass and steel oasis set in the midst of one of India’s most prime corporate and IT center, with tastefully laid out walkways and seating hubs, and hosting some of the most elite names in the epicurean world. But they are both among the top and coolest hangout spots in Delhi, NCR. So if you want to head some place for a dine-out and drinks, which one would it be?
Hauz Khas has about a 170 restaurants, cafes and pubs as compared to Cyber Hub, which has about 45. So if it’s about choice, well Hauz Khas it is. But if it’s about quality vs numbers, the winner is Cyber Hub. With some of the hottest names in the food world – Amici Cafe, Nandos, Farzi Cafe, Made in Punjab, Pita Pit, Fatburger, Oh Calcutta, Dunkin Donuts, Dhaba by Claridges, Sodabottleopenerwalla, Delhi Heights, Smokeys BBQ n Grill – to name just a few, and the widest choice of fine dining cuisines all in one place, this is definitely a foodies paradise…with a touch of class.
When you have Soi 7 Pub & Brewery,Beer Café, Raasta, Wine Company, Hard Rock Cafe all within a few steps from each other, you can’t get a higher buzz than that. A number of restaurants in Cyber Hub also serve liquor to go with the food. But Hauz Khas has over 40 pubs n bars, giving a wide range of choice and experience. Drinking in Cyber Hub is a slightly more elitist experience; you wouldn’t find the charm of quaint terraces that are accessed through winding staircases or smoky basements here, and there’s only that much pub hopping you can do, So, it essentially comes down to what kind of experience you are looking for.
Starbucks! Need I say more? Ok, if you insist… Cyber Hub also hosts Dunkin Donuts, Chai Point, Au Bon Pain, Red Mango and a few others. However, Hauz Khas has over 30 cafes –big names, small ones, quaint ones, charming ones, French, Italian, Turkish, Mediterranean, some open air, some overlooking the lake. The very essence of a good cafe (apart from the coffee and bites) is its atmosphere – laid back. Here, my vote is for Hauz Khas.
What’s a good dining experience without good music? Pubs have to have music, be it piped or live. And going in to listen to a good band play is often deciding factor for a choice of pub or restaurant. Hauz Khas is an artist’s village, by definition. So it’s not uncommon to find pubs hosting young talent on stage (I once witnessed a group using upturned buckets as drums!!) that’s not to say that the pubs there don’t play good music. Some play awesome music. Cyber Hub, on the other hand has high end pubs that play and host good music and shows; it also has a dedicated amphitheatre within its premises that holds large concerts, shows, festivals and performances.
Very often, especially on weekends, one of the main criteria for an evening out is hassle free parking. Dedicated and organised parking makes a big difference. Hauz Khas has street parking; the demarcated parking area is not large, given the sheer numbers that come in here. The Cyber Hub parking too often insufficient to hold the increasing numbers, but it’s still a little better organised.
Hauz Khas started off and still is the hub of high end couture, furniture, jewellery, bric-à-brac and antiques. The place houses various elite boutiques such as Ogaan, Nappa Dori, Aharin India by Prasansha & Ashish, Anuj Lalwani and many more. Cyber Hub on the other hand is an exclusive foodie/pub destination. No distractions here.
This article is not about which is better. Food/dining/entertainment is a subjective choice – cuisine, budget, experience, who you are going out with, the occasion, how far you want to drive – all of these factors and more decide the choice. So sometimes it’s Cyber Hub, sometimes Hauz Khas. I personally love both.
