Every evening’s plan is made with lofty ambition. But where does everyone end up? Fantom Bar and Brewery, South Point Mall, of course! This is exactly what I felt when I walked into Fantom on strong recommendations by some serious connoisseurs of good food, good beer and good things in life. To say that the place was packed would be an underquote!
Where beer rocks and rock brews in the backdrop, and some seriously scrumptious grub takes centre stage, many an afternoon (to evening, and then night) are spent here listening to Dire Straits, Ed Sheeran et all. This is the go-to place for many in Gurgaon who want a mood uplift. In fact, one of those places that are Go. Drink. Eat. Repeat.
The location couldn’t have been better. Located on the Golf Course Road in the plush South Point Mall, Fantom has a direct entry from the main parking entrance as well as one through the mall. Relaxed as well as pulsating in equal measures, the aura of the place is just right. The lounge has a posh and dimly lit vibe, and the crowd varies from families to stags to just-girl-gangs to post-office workers stumbling in to chill. A bit of an upmarket pub, the minimalist wooden décor keeps things cool here. There are different seatings to cater to different moods. There’s couch sitting adding a formal, sophisticated touch. The high bar sitting is informal. You could use the upper deck for a contained feeling of privacy or jump into the action at the bar side. Infact the upper deck could be used for private parties, corporate get-togethers, wherein a mini bar, a screen customized for music videos and X-Box could be provided on request. The smoking room is strategically right in the centre, to ensure that smokers are in a secluded zone but not left out.
The live music and karaoke scene here are pretty popular and take your outing even better. If you are one of those who understand the importance and fun of channelling you inner Adele or Ed Sheeran,Wednesday nights at Fantom are calling you!
In High Spirits
Fans of dark beer, the Dark Lager here pleased our livers most for its unique taste – pleasantly different from the coffee or chocolate stouts around. The barley flavoured Wheat Beer with is perfect for beginners. The Blonde Ale, with a distinctive influence of malts and hops, will please the masses, so go easy on this as you may not know when to stop. The bar menu has plenty to choose from – hard liquor to classic cocktails and Fantom’s own signature cocktails that pack a punch and of course, creativity.
I tried a Ruby Red (Combination of vodka, grape juice, honey, rosemary and lime juice); a refreshing and mild drink that bordered on mild. The Double LIIT seemed another crowd favourite. Besides these, the place stocks all premium whiskeys, rum, vodka, liqueurs, and wines. You name it and they have it!
Food For Thought
Where there are drinks, can bar bites be far away? As good as they are with their alcohol, their food also comes along with a “must try” tag.
The Chicken Malai Tikka, we were told, was a must try. Crafted of indigeneous flavours, this creamy ‘melt in the mouth’ delight was familiar yet exotic!
The Tandoori flowers (Brocolli & Cauliflower) came as another strong recommendation. Despite being a hardcore carnivorous, this one left me asking for more. Full marks to the texture as well as taste!
Herein, let me tell you that whether you like your beer with desi tadka or videshi sauces, this place takes care of every palate.
For mains, there’s a whole world of delish waiting for you. We tried the Grilled Fish Lemon Butter Sauce too. This, and the Grilled Lamb Chops in Black Pepper Sauce are also two dishes that should definitely be tried out for their evocative presentation, generous portions, and great taste. For those who count calories, the Starter Platters at Fantom are really good too, filling but healthy.
The sandwiches and wraps seemed very popular too, from the number of orders on neighbouring tables. With no appetite left for dessert, an internal struggle between temptation and practicality ensued. Thankfully, temptation won. The Dessert menu is limited but to-point. The Gelato was the perfect wrap up to a scrumptious meal and an amazing evening.
Head here for freshly brewed beer, generous portions of bar bites and a posh atmosphere. Potent drinks, a happening menu, and that prime location, I see myself becoming a regular here.
