Delhi is everything what it is today – fancy malls with high rise buildings and satellite cities around that capital. However, it cannot be denied that Delhi’s true rustic character lies in the labyrinth lanes of PuraaniDilli & the taste of its culture is in the food you get there. Modern day life has made it difficult to find that ‘DELHI-CIUS’ experience handy from time to time. To complete that old & historic element of Delhi 6, guess what is back in G-Town? Bara Darhi at The Westin, is back with a bang to celebrate the rich heritage of the city.
Bara Darhi – as the name suggests, represents the maze-like structure of Old Delhi’s food & culture walk. The dining space is situated at the terrace offering you a panoramic view of the hustle bustle down the roads just like how it would be in the old walled city. The new location of the restaurant is above the lounge and bar ‘Story’ which makes it even more lucrative after a Saturday night club scene, as the kitchen is open post-midnight & last order is at 1:45 am.
The entrance to the place greets you with hand crafted spices displayed in copper vessels…so visually appealing. We were welcomed with Indian Classical music giving the place an aura of being in the by lanes of the oldest Delhi area and its antiquated culture. The décor, lighting & live classical music in the background catapulted us right to the heart of Delhi.
The whole vibe of the place totally complimented the concept. As I was seated, I knew that I was in for a royal treat. Hosted by Chef Umez Javed Khan, ‘the man behind the entire show’, who hails from the midst of the culinary haven, Jama Masjid. His selection of flavourful and savoury dishes in the menu are just unquestionable– be it the starters, curries or the dessert. It is hard not to blame the aroma of spices if you’re missing a conversation at the dinner table, with a live kitchen right in front of you! The thrill doubles while watching the meat skewers being grilled in the tandoor & the rest of the kitchen craft…a truly appetizing sight!
First thing on the tasting list was, Paneer seekh kebab which was not only delicious but also so unique. This was followed by their speciality appetizer Bara Darhi Chicken tikka & juicy Mutton seekh kebabs which were succulent enough to melt in the mouth. Being a mutton lover, I was looking forward to the curries I was going to be served in the main course. True taste of everything that the old Delhi charm entails.
The steaming hot Nihari being served onto my plate with the fluffy khameeri roti & traditional shirmal, rekindled my romance with this truly delectable Mutton delight that kept me licking my fIngers! As the night went on, my sweet tooth was gratified by the much awaited good old Phirni which was soft & velvety, topped with saffron & pistachios that left an amazing after taste.
It’s true that tiny things matter the most. A ‘rose petal’ filled finger bowl at the end of your meal or a meetha pan to clean your palate are enough to make it count as an experience rather than just a meal!
All in all, Bara Darhi is a must try for all those who have a knack for the entire deal. It’s perfect for an ideal quaint evening, that takes you away back in time for a soulful mix of ambience and cuisine. This exciting escapade awaits you!
