When he speaks, it trends! That's the power of golden words from our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The Fit India Movement, launched by the PM yesterday at Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi, was no different. On the occasion of National Sports Day, PM Modi administered a fitness pledge to the people of the country.
"Fitness is zero percent investment with infinite returns."
The Prime Minister urged everyone to take up fitness as part of their daily lifestyle to get rid of ailments. According to India's health index, non-communicable diseases kill around 61% people in the country. The number of overweight people has doubled between 2005 and 2015, add to this, every 12th Indian has diabetes, according to data.

After a colourful presentation of India's indigenous martial art forms, dances, yoga and sports, PM Modi paid tribute to Dhyan Chand. He said, "On this day, a great sportsperson was born, Major Dhyan Chand. He amazed the world with his fitness, stamina, and hockey stick."
“Success is related to fitness, success stories of all of our icons from any field of life have a common thread- most of them are fit, have a focus on fitness and are fond of fitness”, the PM added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Major Dhyanchand, India’s sports icon who enthralled the world with his game and techniques. He also congratulated the young sportspersons of the country. PM Modi also gave simple tips that can make people healthy in their day-to-day lives and launched a “Fitness Logo”.
“Their medals are a not only the result of their hard work but reflection of a new zeal and new confidence of a New India”, the PM said.
Centenarian sprinter Man Kaur on Thursday hailed the Fit India Movement. The 103-year old sprinter and her 81-year-old son Gurdev were among the veteran athletes, who attended the Capital event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi being greeted by actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari and BJP MP Gautam Gambhir. The launch was also attended by Rijiju and this year's National Sports Awards winners among others. Newly crowned world champion PV Sindhu earlier urged her fellow Indians to take the Fit India pledge.
Striking a cord with the younger generation, the Prime Minister said, "Whether it is the boardroom or Bollywood, whoever is fit touches the sky."
The University Grants Commission (UGC) asked higher educational institutes to make necessary arrangements to view PM Modi’s address on the launch of the movement. As a part of the fitness pledge, UGC has asked everyone to walk at least 10,000 steps and follow it up in their daily routine.
"If the body is fit, the mind is hit."
