You may say Womens safety is a topic that has been done to death…Yes, we are all aware of the fact that the safety of women, especially those who travel often owing to their jobs or lifestyle, has been a concern of the highest order with Delhi being adjudged as the most unsafe city in India and ranking high amongst the most unsafe in the world!
The spate of women harassment cases splattered across the newspapers and social media speak for the A ray of light shines with Delhi Police hiring 100 private Shuttl AC buses in association with HIMMAT, a safety App, for the benefit and most importantly, the safety of the woman traveler whilst encouraging imparting of self defence training in schools and colleges.
The bus service, inaugurated by Depender Pathak, Special CP (Traffic), already has more than 30000 people traveling on it through the app….and counting. The initiative is slated to help boost the use of HIMMAT app, making travel for women working late nights safer and less hesitant to do so.
35% users are women in these buses…How it works is, when buses start the journey, the buses are equipped with face recognition technique to ensure the identity of the bus drivers. Safety is further ensured by women buying passes for their journey.
I give a thumbs up to this much needed initiative by the Delhi Police. Maybe we will be a little less skeptical towards the efforts made by the safety brigade. Let us hope the initiative has the grit and steadfastness to stand up to the morphed status of women’s safety in India.
