There’s always this one landmark that becomes a city’s trademark. When we talk about Chandigarh, it becomes almost inevitable to talk about the Sukhna Lake- the place that has become the heart throb of the city.
Not many people are aware about this but this prodigious lake is a man-made lake which was created by the same man whom we honor for giving us the most beautiful city in the entire country- Le Corbusier. Covering a stretch of over 3 Km, the lake is not just a body getting its water from a small canal of the river, but it has become the city’s most happening spot bustling with life. The place has a wide array of activities to offer including boating and joy rides along with some sumptuous street food to munch on.
The place offers you the best of the views in the entire city with Shivalik hills in the far off and plethora of lush greenery that make it absolutely surreal. The place has this serene and warm vibe to it that endears to your heart and soul while you bask in the lap of the nature. And if you manage to witness the sun going down the horizon with its changing vibrant hues, well nothing like it.
All that seems quite rosy is not always quite the end of the story. The lake has previously struggled with issues like decline in the water levels. In 1988, the Sukhna region was officially proclaimed as a land of high priority and conservation, which saw subsequent action on behalf of the residents leading to its restoration. In December 2014, there was a widespread Avian Influenza (Bird Flu scare) that led to a temporary ban to the lake premises. The administration tackled the situation but the reason behind the bird flu scare remains unknown till date. Recently, the Sukhna Lake has been subjected to a lot of suicides due to which some people even consider it as a haunted spot.
Nevertheless, the Sukhna lake continues to be the favourite picnic spot of the old and the young alike. There is a structure adjoining the edge of the lake that looks like an island and a lot of ducks can be seen swimming around it. There are a lot of trails here and there that are secret passages through the jungle that is an abode to a lot of animals.
All in all, from old folks taking a walk to hanging out with one’s amigos to spending some quality time with one’s partner, the lake has undoubtedly won the heart of everyone.
