Rock Garden also known as Nek Chand’s Rock Garden is a renowned sculpture garden of Chandigarh. It happens to be one of the most talked about tourist destination after Rose Garden. Founded by Late Nek Chand, it is spread in a total area of 40 acres.
Situated near Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden is built of industrial, home waste and thrown away items. Rock Garden consists of man-made waterfalls that are inter-linked, sculptures made of scrap and other kinds of waste that include bottles, ceramics, glasses, bangles, sinks, broken pipes etc. If you are visiting Chandigarh as a tourist, Rock Garden should be on your list. The garden is visited by almost 5000 visitors everyday.
Rock Garden was started secretly by Nek Chand in his spare time. He himself used to collect materials from demolition sites and recycle them. His work was illegal until it was discovered by the authorities in 1975. But by the time the authorities came to know about this place, it had already turned into 12 acre complex of courtyard wherein each courtyard was filled with hundreds of pottery covered concrete sculptures of musicians, dancers etc. His work was on the brink of getting demolished but since he got the opinion of public on his side, the park was inaugurated to public in 1976 and appeared on the stamp in 1983.
Today, you can experience a series of maze like arches, bridges and tunnels. The open air gallery is full of sculptures that are made of ceramic pottery, glass bangles and wires. If you are a photographer, get your cameras handy because there is a lot of inspiration which you can take from this place.
So, if you are making your way down to Chandigarh or have friends coming over from Chandigarh, make sure this place is not missed out on. Since the winters are almost here, visiting Rock Garden should not be a bad option.
