Shaadi.com, Jeevansaathi.com and Bharatmatrimony.com, we don’t need you anymore. Your credibility as the sure shot ‘homely’ bride finder, is soon about to dwindle! Now IIT-BHU, Barkatullah University in Bhopal are set to take the onus of finding you, that perfectly ‘sanskari’ bahu, to another level. As much as it amuses me, it has, in another sense, left me gobsmacked! How would your thought process meander if I told you that a University who struggled with the ridiculous dilemma of whether the students would write exams in Hindi or English (???), is set to churn out these rare species of ‘sanskar’- filled daughters-in-law, by the minute….uhh, by the month?
In an age where the likes of me go hoarse advocating equality and defying the patriarchal society we live in, here are the so called educationalists who think otherwise and make no bones about it too! The news, as unbelievably idiotic as it is, did interest me enough to slander the mind set.
So, leaving all the bruhaha about equality…(because who wants it, right?), the most important bit of information is this….The Barkatullah University is set to launch a short term course in “how to be an Adarsh bahu”, in it’s bid towards women empowerment! The three month course will be introduced in the next academic session. Now, if you haven’t yet cracked up at the thought of young girls being given real life scenarios right out of Ekta Kapoor serials, to be judged upon, Imagine prospective in-laws hoarding the University, ready to grab the first transformed specimen of a ‘Sanskari’ bride….
The Vice Chancellor Prof D.C. Gupta takes the thought ahead explaining the objective of the course which is “to make girls aware so they can adjust to the new environment after marriage”. The course is slated to be based on subjects as “Sociology and Psychology in order to give girls better understanding of family dynamics and bring about a positive change in the society.”
He further says, “As a University, we have a few responsibilities towards the society as well. Our objective is to prepare such brides who will keep families intact.” ….So very kind of you sir, to be bestowing this ray of enlightenment on ‘Un’sanskari us! The head of Psychology Department, Prof K.N. Tripathi calls it a ‘Noble thought”!
Only if you and those who share your ‘noble’ thoughts could fathom that empowerment and the secret of harmonious families lies in equality of thought, speech, respect and action. Maybe a little education on it would have made it worth our while. The ludicrousness of the mindset, worries me, for it’s sheerly defying the very purpose that the idea claims to fulfil. The chauvinistic tone of the ‘offer’ speaks nothing short of ignorance and sexism at it’s worst.
Now, if you really were talking about service towards society, simultaneous education imparted to prospective ‘adarsh’ grooms and more so ‘adarsh’ in-laws…. would be something I might have tilted towards….. Or Better still, If you really do have idle time and teachers at hand, divert it towards imparting basic education to the underprivileged…and actually do something noble… ….. Or Maybe a course in equality of ‘sanskars’?
